MONTHLY PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Sunday, May 20th
7:30 to 11:30 a.m. (In the 8th Grade Patio Area) includes Pancakes, Eggs, Sausage or Spam, Rice, Coffee & Orange Juice.
Being an 8th grader is a big responsibility at St. Philomena School. You are the leader and have to set a great example. You have more responsibilities, such as being head of Family Units. One of the 8th grade privileges are getting to wear the comfy 8th grade sweatshirt. There is also the choice to be a part of more clubs, and being in Student Council as a Commissioner.
One of the things you have to do as an 8th grader preparing for high school is choose a high school. You don’t have to pick one immediately. Always apply to at least 2-3 high schools, just in case you don’t get accepted into one of them. Next, go to all the open houses and orientations you can. Find out everything about the school with your parents. Remember, you have to think, “Will this be the school that I can see myself going to for the next 4 years? How are the education and curriculums? What are the AP classes and extracurricular activities?” Then get the applications and fill them out early. Sometimes sending your application early may raise your chances of getting in. Some schools need you to take a test, so prepare for those too. When you reach the interview stage, make sure to be calm, and don’t stress out about it. After that, just pray and wait for your acceptance letters.
With all this going on, there’s a lot of classes and homework to manage. Along with that, you might be in a lot of clubs and sports. Time management and organization is the key to handling everything. As you’re reading this, you might feel overwhelmed about being an 8th grader soon. Through all this though, you’ll have a great time. You’ll enjoy your last year with your class. There are so many fun activities and field trips too. By the time you’re in 8th grade, you won’t have a problem. After all, we all managed it, and so can you.
Chocolate, video games, chips, and cookies are just a few sacrifices people make. What are you giving up for God this year?More importantly, what are you going to do for God? Lent is the 40 weekdays from Ash Wednesday to Easter observed by the Roman Catholic, Eastern, and some Protestant churches as a period of penitence and fasting. This year, instead of giving up something, many people are going to start to do something daily for the love of God.For example, instead of giving up your favorite food, you can instead start relating the Gospels and readings at Mass to your own lives. Now, let us wait for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ!
1. Pray for others more often! St. Valentine, who was a priest, prayed for others continuously. Talk to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, at Mass, in your bedroom, or any time at all! Pray for the people in your life: your mom and dad, brothers and sisters, family, friends, and anyone else in need. 2. Make sacrifices for the ones you love. Help your mom wash the dishes. Play with your little brother or sister, even when you would rather do something else. Offer to help your dad wash the car. Little things you do for Jesus and your loved ones aren’t that little…they really count! 3. Write a letter or make a card for someone you usually wouldn’t, or a family member who lives far away. St. Valentine wrote many “love” letters to Christians in need, encouraging them to love Jesus and to keep strong in their faith. Send a card to your grandma, grandpa, cousin or friend, telling them that you love them and are praying for them. They’ll really appreciate it! 4. Read the Bible and other holy books. Jesus has a message for you! He loves you and always wants to spend time with you. Then meditate on what you read, and ask Jesus to help you understand it. You will grow closer to God, and soon will hear His voice when you need to most. 5. Donate to the poor. There are many people in the world who need our help. Take the time to sort through old clothes, toys, and other items that will be a lot of help to the needy. 6. Ask the Saints and Angels for help. They are awesome role models who loved Jesus nonstop, and they are always ready to intercede for us and help us make good choices! 7. Ask St. Valentine to pray for us! Say this prayer: Prayer to St Valentine O glorious advocate and protector, St Valentine, look with pity upon our wants, hear our requests, attend to our prayers, relieve by your intercession the miseries under which we labor, and obtain for us the divine blessing, that we may be found worthy to join you in praising the Almighty for all eternity: through the merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
On Friday, March 23, our school will be holding our first ever Social Studies Fair from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Each class has been assigned their own theme, and each student in that class will either chose or be assigned a project. The students in junior high are preparing for the Social Studies Fair by researching assigned topics, creating brochures with historical information on our laptops, reading about historical figures by using different sites, creating pamphlets, grouping up with other classmates to organize the classroom, discussing what materials we are going to bring to showcase our topic, and discussing the layout of our classrooms.
Our school held a Science Fair last year, but a Science Fair and a Social Studies Fair do have their differences. The Science Fair was focused on following the scientific method, and students made their own science projects testing a hypothesis. This year, we will learn about some of the most important parts of history that have shaped our world today. To be able to turn in a great project, students should be able to manage their time well, which will allow them to properly research their topic, gather good sources, and construct a model display to deepen their learning experience. Even though the Fair is on the 23rd of March, teachers may ask the students to turn their project in a day or two ahead of time to be able to organize their classroom well. You will find out which class has which topic below. We hope to see you at the Social Studies fair on March 23. God bless you!

The field of 64 teams in the big dance went now down to the Final 4 this past weekend. In a hard fought battle against the undefeated 11-0 squad from Christ the King, the Boys Varsity Basketball Team pulled away in the second half of the game to win and clinch a spot in the Elite 8 for the second consecutive year. Highlight video of that game is below. Their next game was against defending champs, St. Jane Francis. Despite playing their hearts outs, the Spartans' size and athleticism were too much to overcome.
In the end, the boys had a great run this season and can be proud that they represented our school with class, dignity, and honor. Great job, boys! You have a bright future ahead of you.
We would also like to thank all the families and staff who came out to support the boys during March Madness. Without your support, our program would not be where it is today.
Congratulations to the Girls B CYO Team for winning their first round game against St. Augustine. Their next game is Wednesday, March 7, 6pm at St. Anthony (St. Anthony School, 233 Lomita St., El Segundo) against St. Anastasia. Come out and support the girls with your Crusader spirit. Keep playing hard girls!
Congratulations to the Boys C Team this past weekend for placing 2nd in the consolation championship and to 4th grader Zachary T. for earning the All-Tournament Player Award. Great job, boys!
For the second straight year, the St. Philomena Varsity Boys Basketball Team makes it to the round of the Sweet 16! They battled some tough opposition from St. Anastasia in the first round and Assumption in the second. Check out the video below for highlights from their round 2 victory. Come out to support the boys at their next game this Saturday, March 3 at 11am at Damien High School (2280 Damien Ave., La Verne, CA). Thank you also to the families and faculty who came out to support the team. Keep up the great job, boys!
Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Basketball Team! They finished the regular season with a 9-2 record and earned a spot in the field of 64 teams. Their first game will be this coming Saturday, Feb 25, 1pm at Bishop Montgomery High School. Come out and support the boys with your Crusader Spirit!

Congratulations to our varsity boys basketball team for going 3-1 at this week's St. John Bosco tournament with wins against Our Lady of Talpa, St. Jerome, and St. Raymond. Also, our very own RJ (7th grade) was honored with the All-Tournament MVP award. Great job! Way to start the season off boys!
Congratulations to our very own Dhahran W. in 8th grade! He has been awarded the Flag Football All-Conference Award by the CYO after having an outstanding year playing on both sides of the football. The All-Conference Award is awarded to the top athletes in a particular CYO sport and is the equivalent of an All-Star selection. He will be honored along with other All-Conference student-athletes at the end of the school year during the annual CYO Sports Banquet. Job well done and keep up the great work.
Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Basketball Team! They took 2nd place in the Girls Fall Classic Basketball Tournament this past weekend and Keani received the team MVP award. Keep up the great work, girls!
